Well, I even have an entire book about the theme. I ended up having no time to read it all.

My English sucks, but I'll try to tell you what I know. I use the Androginy word on the most common use for it: a male that looks a female. Some people use Androginy for females that looks like males, but this one has another term: Gino-Android. So, by default, Android is man-like. Explains a lot.

Androginy, the word and the most known concept, comes from an ancient Greek myths from many fonts. It comes from the sufixes Andros (male, as in androsperm) and Ginos (female, as in Ginecologist). The most well-known reference is Plato's "Banquet", that generated the "twin souls" concept, where human were originally like two people wrapped up in one. There were male-male ones, female-female ones and the odd ones male-female ones. The gods were envious of their perfection and got angry at their pride and sliced them all in two and separated them forever.

In fact, ancient myths have the androginy in their repertoire because of the obvious fascinating difference between male and female characteristics and associations with nature powers.

The theater has a bit to do with it, if you think that in many cultures only men could take part in those, so the female roles were given for effeminated or younger men.

There is a psychology therm that reffer to the matter, as being gender identity related, when the person have both sexes characteristics. Not necessarily they are homo or bi.

Some genetic disorder or bad formation creates intriguing duality on human species. Such as Hermafrodity or XXY Syndrom (Klinenfelter).
